If you’ve ever been out to the farm, or been following us for a while you’ve definitely come across our doggies Spud and Winnie. They’re integral parts of our family, and hard workers on the farm, being in charge of rodent control and morale boosting efforts. We know Spud has a lot of friends and fans that follow us on here so we wanted to ask everyone to send him all the love and good thoughts and energy you can send him right now.

He underwent an emergency surgery on his spine yesterday after he was temporarily paralyzed in his back legs due to a herniated disc. He is stable and recovering right now. The surgery saved his life, and we’re now hoping that he will be able to relearn how to walk again on his own. If not, he will be zipping around the farm in a doggy wheelchair for the rest of his long life. He’s been one of the greatest sources of joy in our lives since we got him as a young pup six years ago. It’s been heartbreaking to see him go through this. Please send him good thoughts and love ❤️

To other dog owners as a PSA and if we can help prevent this happening to another dog in the future: Spud went from running around like normal to not being able to walk at all in the span of about three days by the time we could race down to Denver to get his procedure done. If your dog ever starts to lose function in their back legs even a little bit you should treat it as an emergency, because even a day later they may not be able to walk at all. It can happen so fast, and the sooner they can get in for surgery the better the prognosis is.

We appreciate everyone’s good thoughts and wishes 💚

Plant, water, cultivate, harvest, sell and repeat from now into October. So nice to be back in the rhythm. We couldn’t do it without our awesome crew who keeps things moving. We say it all the time, but give them a pat on the back and tip them a few bucks to buy a beer if you see them at the markets or the CSA pickup.

Kicking things off with the crew for our biggest summer on the farm yet 👨🏻‍🌾👩🏻‍🌾 We were spreading compost, broadforkin’, getting some time in on our new walk-behind tractor, even got some things planted! We’re maxing out our two acres of land this season, and growing a whole buncha food. But most importantly we’re growing something else too…👶🏻

The garlic is up, our new flail mower is already proven invaluable, tomatoes are growing, snow’s melting, bikes are coming out of hibernation. I love it. This is the time of year to quit thinking and start doing.

It’s a living, breathing organism that needs to be tended to year round in different ways. Right now we’re taking a microscope to some of the finer details, prodding and examining them, turning them over and back again. It’s a fun time, with lots of exciting happenings and big changes on the horizon.

The results of some of that tinkering are slowly making their way out into the world. Our CSA shares will be up for sale in a few short weeks, with new free choice pickup options at the @steamboatfarmersmarket and @vailfarmersmarket all summer long. Our ‘23 Farmer’s Marker season has wrapped up for the year 🍾 Thanks to everyone who found us in Steamboat and Vail all summer. We’ll miss seeing you all each week, but we’re pretty excited to have our weekends back to get out there and make up for lost time. We’ve got a few more projects to work on before we turn our attention to harvesting all of our storage crops for the fall and winter. We’ve got more storage veg in the ground than ever before, so it’s gonna be a big job. And with all our tunnels filled with winter greens, we’re trying to keep the party going to Christmas and beyond. If you’ve been good, Santa’s bringing lettuce and carrots to everyone in the Yampa Valley this year. But if you’re on the naughty list you get turnips, sorry.

For most things we’ll still wait a few more weeks, but these grapefruit-sized rutabagas were inhabiting some valuable bed space that will soon be planted to winter greens in our of our two new tunnels. So they were the first to go!

This week we finished up the outdoor planting and seeding for the season, which means all eyes are on harvesting, tidying up, and fall projects from here on out.
Seems like just yesterday the first garlic was poking through the snow in April.

It’s hard to really show all the work that’s gone into this whole farm thing on social media, but if you’ve seen our haggard selves at any point in the summer hopefully you can tell what we’ve put into this land. An olympic size swimming pool of sweat, definitely some tears, probably a little blood too. Although we’ve been pretty good this year about not slicing our fingers open while harvesting. But it’s been an undertaking, to be sure. @sydney.ellbogen @c.gerbs @jessiesykes17 @naatalieconnolly @katie_stan have all been busting their butts all year to make this acre of land produce food like crazy. We hope you’ve all enjoyed the fruits of our hard work this season. Lots more to come!

Tomato-town, USA. Population: Me. Lots on the way, finally!

It was a beautiful morning to pull all of our fall and winter storage onions out of the ground 🧅 We finally had the space this season to really go nuts with the onion crop, and it paid off. These babies are the best we’ve ever grown. Now that they’re all out of the ground and curing in the greenhouse, we’ll give these beds a quick flip and have fall greens and roots growing in them by the end of the week! No time to waste this time of year 🏃🏻‍♂️
